Snow!

novsnow.jpg

The arrival of snow has been making kids happy for a long time. Why? It usually means a SNOW DAY! There are lots of things kids can do in the snow. Like sledding, snow ball fights, building snowmen, and making snow angels.

This week, snow made a lot of fun for me. I built two snowmen on the first day. The second day of snow I made one snowman almost as tall as me! On the third day of snow, two wacky teenagers destroyed my first two snowmen. I was really sad until I realized I could use the remnants of my creations for new snowmen. So, this time I made 4 more snowmen up on the yard out of the reach of wacky teenagers! By time I was done, I had made a whole family of snowmen including a baby!

Playing in snow can be so much fun you don’t even think about where it comes from. When snow falls it starts as rain. As is falls it freezes into ice crystals . The ice crystals clump together forming snow. This makes snow one of the four kinds of precipitation. Even the science of snow is fun!

    Georges,

Snow is fun. When I was your age you couldn’t keep me in the house when it snowed. When I played in the snow, I never seemed to get cold. You know its cold, but you just don’t seem to mind. Do you feel like that? I agree, even the science of snow is fun.

Driving in snow is a different matter, especially if its rained, the rain water is turned to ice, and then its snows. You have drive very carefully and skillfully.

Have you heard of sublimation? I remember my mother would hang wet clothes out in the winter (sky overcast and the temperature below freezing). They (the water) would freeze. After while (maybe two or three hours) she would bring in the clothes and they would be dry. The ice had turned directly to vapor without melting. This is called sublimation. This is when a liquid is in its solid state, but goes directly to its gaseous state without passing through its liquid state. You are right science is fun.

  • Dadster:

I loved all of your snowmen – I think they were very very cool. Next time it snows: you and I – in the yard – snowball fight!

  • G:

    Dadster,

    I can’t wait! You’re ON! :D

  • G:

    Grandpa Roy,

I didn’t know that what you called it–sublimation. But I knew it was possible. It’s not cold enough here to work. My mom says I’ve become a true Oregonian because I think 70’s is hot and she says that’s not hot in comparison to where you live. Does it get cold enough where you live to do the sublimation trick? Oh! And I have a secret post just for you–my mom is sending you the passcode to read it! :D

  • *sigh* I live in Sacramento where there is NO snow at all. Unless you count the dumb tiny ice flakes that appear at one in the morning and then disappear before I wake up at seven. I would love to go to the snow. I’ve only been there twice, once when I was so little every two steps I would fall flat on my little head so you could only see the back of my beanie hat, and last year, but it was all melty and since I was on a field trip I couldn’t throw snowballs or play around. But when I’m older and I become a director I’ll go to New York University where it’ll snow a lot. I’ve never even made a snowman.

  • Merry Christmas, Geido!

  • Merry Christmas, Bunny.

What kind of director do you want to be? You already know where you want to go to school? I think I want to go to MIT amongst other colleges. I might go there for my Master’s degree. I want to study Physics and Electronics. My mom says that’s a lot to study. How about you?

I’m sorry you haven’t seen snow. We don’t get much here, really. So, when it does snow I try to play in it as much as possible. Because I’m homeschooled, my mom let’s me! I have to make up classes later.

  • Well, I’ll either end up in NYU for directing or UC Davis for veternarian courses. I just love animals! They are so wonderful. If I become a director I’ll do movies and TV shows. But if I become a writer I don’t have a clue as to where to go to college.
